Obituary Mr. Grat Fisher

City Commissioner Grat Fisher, 76, a native and life long resident of Bellville, died at Bellville Hospital Sunday, March 1, 1970, at 6:15 p.m., of a sudden heart attack.

The Rev. Alvis Bell officiated at funeral rites held from the chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment was at Oak Knoll.

Pallbearers were G. F. Bader, Paul McGee, T. L. Smith, Earl Meyers, H. M. Brouillette and Wilton Weige.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gus Fisher, he was born in Bellville March 19, 1893. He attended Bellville High School and was married to Miss Edna Ludwig September 27, 1914, at Peters.

For many years he was the operator of Fisher's Meat Market, until fire destroyed his business in 1962. Mr. Fisher was commonly known as "the watermelon king of Austin County," having developed this particular industry into a highly profitable endeavor for himself and many, many others.

He was a prominent member of the Bellville Lions Club, having attended the international convention in France, and was a member and past president of the Bellville School Board. Mr. Fisher was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Bellville, and was highly regarded by a host of friends and relatives.

Surviving are his wife: two daughters, Mrs. T. D. Cook of Bellville and Mrs. T. E. Woodward of Lake Jackson; a son, James L. Fisher of Corpus Christi; four sisters, Mrs. Nonie Schavrda of Houston, Mrs. Annie Belle Johnson of Lockport, Ill., Mrs. Blanche Mathes of Stillwater, Okla. And Mrs. Mattie Burch of Channelview: five brothers, Leon Fisher, Raymond Fisher, Lester Fisher and Paul Fisher of Bellville, and Chester Fisher of Oregon; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death was another brother, Clarence Fisher, who died in combat in World War II.
