Leon Fisher Obituary
Funeral services for Leon Fisher, 81, of Bellville were held from the Chapel of the Pete E. Etlinger Funeral Home in Bellville at 2 p. m. on Thursday, May 20, with Rev. Alvis Bell officiating. Interment was in the Oak Knoll Cemetery. Graveside services were under the direction of the local Masonic Lodge of Bellville presided over by Maurice Tucker. Pallbearers were members of the Masonic Lodge, Leroy Sterling, W. R. Crick, Jimmie Stewart, senior warden, Harold Buckley, junior warden, Billie Johnson, two year warden, W. J. Goodman and Bible carrier Fritz Roensch. Mr. Fisher passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 18, at 1 p. m. having attained the age of 81 years, 1 month and 9 days. He died suddenly from a heart attack. Born in Bellville on April 9, 1895 he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Fisher. He was reared in Bellville and attended the Bellville Public School. A member of the Baptist Church, Mr. Fisher was employed as a boiler maker for the Santa Fe Railroad from 1922 until his retirement in 1967. He was a member of the Bellville Masonic Lodge. On January 29, 1916 he was married to the former Miss Alma Mae Stafford in ceremonies performed in Bellville. Mrs. Fisher passed away on June 8, 1959. Survivors include: daughters, Mrs. Ruth King of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Mrs. C. F. (Helen) Low of Middleburg, Virginia; sisters, Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Joliet, Illinois, Mrs. Nonie Schrader of Houston, Mrs. Blanche Mathis of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Mattie Raver of Bay City; brother, Raymond Fisher of Bellville; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers and one granddaughter. -- p. 12 A MASONIC GIANT DIES Leon Fisher died Tuesday, May 18, peacefully, in his sleep. If anyone in Texas can be called a Masonic giant, it would be he. During his 81 years of life he instructed countless dozens of young and aspiring members of the Ancient and Accepted Order of Masonry. He lived by the many precepts and examples of the Order and was never too busy to give good and wholesome instruction to others. Because he lived a full and fruitful life, it is hard to grieve at his death, yet all of us who knew him for his great character and devotion, cannot help feeling a deep sense of loss. But if there is a Heaven, I am quite sure that this great gentleman is there. He will be sorely missed, yet his influence on the lives of so many, many people, will endure as long as history. Yes, Leon was a true giant in the field of Masonry, and in many other fields. I loved the fellow, quite as I love his survivors. May the grace of God be with him and his family, now and always. -FWZ- |
