Harry Richard Zander passed away peacefully on May 7, 2013. He was born in 1926 to Herman and Annie (Schavrda) Zander. Harry was married in 1948 to Lenora Peschel at St. John Lutheran Church.

Harry served in the U.S. Navy. He was awarded the American Area Campaign and WWII Victory Medals. He was employed by the Texas Department of Transportation and after his retirement he worked as a ranchers’ helper.

Harry was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church and served as an usher, assistant Sunday school secretary, member of choirs and worked at the retreat center. He was a member of American Legion Post 115 where he held the office of Commander and Adjutant, Woodmen of the World, the Sportsman Association and Men in Mission. He was awarded the Humanitarian Award for outstanding community work.

Harry enjoyed playing softball as a catcher. He coached and umpired Little League baseball. He was actively involved in the building of the Bellville Little League park. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting with his grandsons. He played dominoes and got great pleasure from telling jokes that made people laugh.

Those left to cherish Harry’s life are: Wife Lenora Zander; son Gary Zander; daughter and son-in-law Jolle and Julian Davis; grandsons Chad Zander, Ryan Zander and wife Allison and Derrick Zander; great grandchildren Zachary and Zoe Zander. He is also survived by sisters Ora Nell Hoppe and Doris King and husband Clarence as well as sisters-in-law LaVelle Zander, Edith Zander and Ileene Zander.

He was preceded in death by son Bruce Zander; brothers Herman, Isador, Roy and Sterling Zander; and sisters Lillie Dell Deutrich, Alwina Wienecke and Evelyn Zander; and his parents.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel and services were held at St. John Lutheran Church. Pallbearers were Chad Zander, Ryan Zander, Allen Wienecke, William Peschel, Fred Deutrich, Philip Zander, Warren Brown and Ronnie Robertson. Honorary pallbearers were Derrick Zander, Julian Davis, Harry’s nieces and nephews, the Sunday morning coffee bunch, church choir members and Blanche Fahrenthold.
