J. W. Brooks Buried at Oak Knoll Saturday Pioneer Surveyor Had Lived 70 Years at Bellville Home To the long list of our pioneers who, within the post few months, have been called from their labors here, must be added the name of John Williamson Brooks, who died at his home here Friday, July 21, at 12:30 a.m., at the age of 82 years, 0 months, 25 days. Funeral services were conducted from the First Methodist Church on Saturday morning, July 22, with Rev. Lamar Clark officiating, followed by burial at Oak Knoll with Masonic Honors. J. Lee Dittert, Anton Dittert, J. L. Sterling, T. B. Wheat, C. A. Master and Chas. Strauss served as pallbearers. Decedent, a son of William Wyatt Brooks and Louisa Atkinson Brooks, was born about two miles west of Bellville on Dec. 26, 1856, moved with his parents to what is now the old Brooks home in 1869, and has lived there continuously ever since, greatly attached to the old place, and appreciative of the natural beauty of its location. Mr. Brooks was a member of the Methodist Church, which he joined at an early age. He was recognized as the oldest member, in point of service, of the Bellville church, and has faithfully served it in many capacities, from Sunday School teacher to chairman of its board of trustees. He was also a veteran member of Bellville Lodge No. 223, A. F. and A. M., and in his daily life exemplies the precepts of that order. By profession he was a civil engineer, and among other things left to his children is a surveyor's compass, purchased about the year 1880, and used almost continuously for the past 60 years. Although born at an earlier day than this, when schooling was less attainable in Texas, Mr. Brooks was well educated, and possessed of a keen mind and a dry wit that made him always an interesting companion. Mr. Brooks lost his wife, Mary Eunice Brooks, in February, 1938. They are survived by three sons, Dr. A. H. Brooks of Hempstead, Dr. G. S. Brooks of Corrigan, and Marion E.
