Matilda was born to Frank and Theresa Susen in Nelsonville, Texas on November 14, 1912 and spent her childhood in Bellville, Texas. In 1931, she married Johnnie T. Bravenec and moved to Moulton, Texas. In 1950, Matilda and Johnnie moved their family to the Heights in Houston, where Matilda lived for the past 58 years. She was employed by Foley's Department Store, and worked at the downtown store location and later at the store in Northwest Mall. Matilda retired after thirty years of service at Foley's.

Survivors include: her daughter, Mary Ann Zimmerman and spouse Cletus, and their children, Susan Lawrence and Mary Allison Polnau; her son, Samuel K. Bravenec and spouse, Tricia; son Donald's spouse, Roselyn and their children, Sharon Contreras, Donnie Bravenec, and Lisa Shaw.

Matilda is also survived by great-grandchildren: Candice Haake, Eric Contreras, Colin Contreras, Nathan Shaw, Stephanie Lawrence, Meredith Lawrence, George Lawrence, Allison Polnau, Katie Polnau, Julia Polnau, and Hannah Polnau; her sister, Bessie Martino; and her long-time friend and companion, Leo Etlinger.

Matilda was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith and was a charter member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Houston, a member of the St. Theresa Women's Club and of SPJST Lodge 88. God rewarded her devotion to her faith and family with good health and a sharp mind until her recent illness. She was a family treasure who was able to thoroughly enjoy virtually every holiday, birthday, wedding, and graduation surrounded by family and friends. Matilda leaves behind a legacy of countless memories that include her wonderful Czech accent, recipes for turkey dressing and cranberry sauce, meticulous appearance, fierce independence, and tremendous generosity for others.

The family expresses their sincere thanks to Dr. J. Mario Gonzales and the nursing staff of 6th Floor/Main of Methodist Hospital for their care and compassion during Matilda's brief illness.

Visitation and Vigil Service: Sunday, January 4, 2009, at The Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd in Houston.
Funeral Mass: Monday, January 5, 2009 at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 6622 Haskell Drive, Houston TX 77007.
Committal Service: Monday, January 5, 2009 at the Susen Family Cemetery in Nelsonville, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Matilda Bravenec to St. Theresa Catholic Church.
